In a world where opportunities are not always evenly distributed, it is truly inspiring to witness individuals like James Derrick and Omari Kimweri making a significant impact in their community through the power of boxing. Omari, a former world flyweight boxing champion, has transitioned from a professional career to dedicating his spare time to training disadvantaged youth in the noble art of boxing.
Teaming up with James Derrick at Derrick’s Boxing Gym, they have created a safe haven where young minds can not only learn the sport of boxing but also cultivate essential life skills such as discipline, connection, and work ethic. James’ motivation to establish the gym stemmed from a genuine concern for the increasing number of young people turning to crime in their hometown. Through the gym, they are providing an alternative path for these kids, steering them away from negative influences and towards a brighter future.
One heartwarming example of the positive impact of their work is Zack “the black lizard” Hankin, a young talent from Mount Isa who has found confidence and purpose through boxing. Zack is now gearing up to attend a training camp and competition in Brisbane. Under the guidance of James, Bailey, Omari, and the supportive community at Derrick’s Gym, Zack is not only honing his boxing skills but also building character and resilience that will serve him well beyond the ring.
This story is a testament to the transformative power of mentorship, community support, and the unwavering dedication of individuals like James and Bailey Derrick and Omari Kimweri. By investing in the next generation and equipping them with both physical and mental strength, they are sowing the seeds for a brighter tomorrow, one punch at a time.
At RIMEX we’re proud to have Omari on our staff in Mount Isa, and grateful to be able to contribute through our sponsorship of the gym.
